The trouble with tolerance

In these times of globalisation, mass mobility of people and interdependence, the International Day of Tolerance is a laudable exercise in trying to diffuse the problems arising from our advancement to a more pluralist society, says freelance writer Ciara

The British Government stands accused of “double standards” on the emotive issue of asylum. While the Foreign Office in London has warned that 21 countries face humanitarian disasters, UK immigration officials have refused refuge to 77,000 fl

I disagree with your headline "Hypocritical" UK - we are a small island - we have so many millions to feed, school, find work for, use the NHS - I'm sorry - we simply cannot take anymore migrants. We should bring our troops home from Afghanistan and employ them to guard our shores from economic migrants who seek to come here simply for our benefits. We simply have to stop policing the world and interfering with other countries' policies, it just doesn't work like that anymore - if we take 40 a day - it will increase to double that a day, because these migrants then bring their friends and families here too. I should know, in Malta - from where I originally came from - fairly I must say, my dad was in the Royal Navy and guarded these (British) shores from Icelandic attacks on fishermen in the 50's and 60's, we are now getting economic migrants from Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya etc - in most cases they jump cruise ships - phone on their mobiles their migrant friends already on Malta - they get picked up by our one or two police boats, and their friends go and meet them on the shore - and the harshest thing said to their benefactor Maltese hosts is usually "keep the boats, repair them - cos one day we will take over your island and we will ship you all out on those boats!!!" How about that for gratitude? In this day and age, with massive unemployment, the locals would feel resentful of more people coming over to take the precious few jobs remaining. Thank God I am now a new pensioner - otherwise I would be in real trouble, I was lucky enough to work for 41 years, I never earned more than £13000 a year at the most, but it was work - and that's another comment, I don't know what it feels like to earn £100,000 every year, it would be like winning the lottery every year, so yes, why shouldn't the rich earners contribute more??? This country is in the mess it is because of the bankers' greed and feeble governments - old and new - who cannot make decent fair laws, they pay themselves handsomely for the privilege of being in goverment, and don't bother with the populus once they get there!!!

Britain is full. These migrants, by the way, have passed through a number of safe countries where they could have claimed asylum. They have chosen not to because they want to avail themselves of the economic benefits they would receive here. Unfortunately, those benefits are paid for by hard pressed UK taxpayers who are very close to revolt.

“Hypocritical” UK rejects asylum seekers. Admitting concern about countries does not mean that the unfortunate people who live there can come here. And just as a matter of interest how many asylum seekers have Russia welcomed with open arms? Or any other country for that matter. If the UK is hypocritical, then what about the rest!

I find it hard to immagine a nation that has subjected half the globe to colonialism to stand up and talk about immigrants. Britain for centuries has been invading continents and naming cities and towns after it own. The current residents of those continents have british ancestries. Now we have a reversal of circumstances, immigrants are comming to the UK to work, live and find refuge. The benefit system that you so dearly hold on to is not what it appears. Immigrants do not automaticaly recieve benefits, they go through the same process as the residents do. Asylums only get to recieve some form of finnancial assistance only once they have been granted refugee status. PLEASE research the issues and circumstances of asylums and refugees before making assumptions of what they recieve. Economic immigrants are a different story altogether. Let us separate the categories bbefor we jump to conclusions

Joe, your point about Economic and genuine cases of Immigration is duely noted, however as Cate mentioned, we are only a small Island. This in itself is not a sole arguement. Sooner or later, there will be serious civil unrest in Britain, not because of finance or foreign wars etc, but because our Governement is giving our country away to Immigrants. Mosque's are jumping out of the ground left, right and center, our laws are changing to make it impossible to say someones colour, to disagree with someone's religion or to question things. Added to this, Muslim extremists are leaching from our state and plotting our demise, the public is not happy with this to say the least! We are facing a major period of civil unrest, when this will come I do not know, however, due to our high levels of immigration it is getting closer and closer. From what i understand though, true or not, it seems as though the French are not helping the solution by simply guiding the immigrants through their country to our shores. It is a very real problem especially with the current budget deficit.

This is a very provocative headline. I'd be very interested to hear about the level of Russian immigration. But lets base it on geographic size, ie how many migrants you let in per 100 square miles. You have to remember that GB is a very small country that apparnetly half the world wants to come and live in. If you arrive at one of our ports of entry seeking asylum, you'll most likly get it. if however, you come most of the way accross Europe passing through many safe countries and then try and sneak into the UK then i sincerley hope that you will be turned away.

It would be in the best interest of the British people and its Government to stop bringing refugees into your country all together. I repsect their right to continue bringing in refugees, but at the same time England cannot complain about the political, economic, and social problems that comes with it, if it continues. I live in the United States and we are suffering the political, economic, and social problems that thousands of refugees are creating in America everyday. I wish our stupid government would wake up, but that would be asking too much from them. So America allows anywhere from 50,000 to 75,000 refugees to come here every year to collect welfare, Social Security pensions without ever paying any Social Security taxes, free medical care, free education, free housing, free food, and having the opportunity to commit crimes like robbery, murder, and rape because of our lenient legal system. The American Government just doesn't get it. So I say to the British people, don't be stupid like America, if you want to save England from looking like an African and/or Asian country, maybe you should change your refugee and immigration policies. In 100 years England may not be English anymore. Maybe, Buckingham Palace will be torn down to make room for another Mosque, African or Asian Museum or housing for more African and Asian people coming to England. The choice is yours. As for America, its too late for us.

Britain is a small island which is already weighed down with both legal and illegal immigrants and "asylum Seekers" they are already straining the school system, housing, health, and benefits systems,Russia in comparison is enormous yet we don't hear much about the asylum seekers clambering to get into Russia,in fact we hear nothing about it,seems to me you're the hypocrites, you don't want them but you want everyone else to have them, you haven't changed one iota, your still communist in every way but name, if your not willing to help, mind your own business just as your always telling everyone else to do,the reason the refugees don't want to go to Russia is that you offer them nothing but more of what they left behind, they don't trust you,and who's to blame them? All you do is bully and threaten your former sattelites because they want to move even further away from your corrupt system and all your sabre rattling at the west doesn't do much to make them change their minds, go back to sleep nobody in britain cares much about your opinions.

These Immigrants are only trying to get into England because there friends and or reletives, already here have told them to (get here as soon as you can ,they throw money at you soon after they have given you a house and mobile phone)they furnish the house ,and pay you for having babies , and feed you and babies and anyone else who lives in your house,ie grandad +grandma. They have come through many safe country`s on the way here but don`t stop because they are not given what they know they can get here. They and the rest of the world laugh at the stupib brits who pay all their lives so that any one can be able to rip them off without even realy trying.

I am shocked at the openness of the Afghan hoards that are now trying to get to UK via Greece. Meanwhile the UK youth serving in the BRITISH ARMY are fighting and loosing their LIVES in Afghanistan. FOR WHAT ? Bring our boys back home to defend the UK borders, Send the Afghan hoard back to FIGHT FOR THEIR OWN COUNTRY.

The UK has taken so many immigrants that it is sinking under the strain, we simply do not have the infrastructure, money or space for more, but we do have a government who let millions of them enter the country, and yes they do get benefits, they also go to immigration centres where they advise each other to get a British girl pregnant (shame on the British girl ) cause then they will get a house and benefits. I used to be really upset by these news stories of people in terrible danger needing asylum, but I no longer care I see them on the news and it no longer has an affect. I hope when we finally get the general election we are waiting for, people have the good sense to vote for people with good anti immigration policies. I want our borders properly policed and immigrants stopped from coming ashore, not just ignored and allowed to go where they like, or even encouraged to wander off so they will not be a statistic that the government has to hide from the electorate.

Close your borders while you can. That is the only answer. It's probably too late for the U.S. Our borders are quite porous. And many in the government are seeking to give all illegal aliens asylum and citizenship so they'll have a new class of impoverished, dependent voters. Close your borders, or fall. Just look at California.

The more items I read like this the more determined I am to vote BNP. Enough is enough. Our public services just can't cope with the volume any longer. Our pensions are one of the lowest in Europe and our green belts are fast disappearing under the pressure of housing needs. Where is OUR quality of Life? We're sinking fast and successive governments just fiddle ( literally) while England burns.

The asylum rules state clearly that that (a) the 'refugee' has to be in real personal danger, mainly from the authorities, in his/her native country and (b) he/she should seek asylum in the nearest safe country. In the first place, most of the 'refugees' arriving in the UK have never been in real danger from their authorities and are therefore committing a gross deception in attempting to enter the country on false pretenses; and, in the second place, the UK is by no means or measure the first safe country from their various countries of origin (usually Turkey, the Middle east, Africa, etc). They have no business whatever applying here. They are simply dishonest. Why should we allow them to embezzle our resources ?

OH my god, yes we british are sick and tired of 'asylum stories'. I have lived in africa on and off for more than 10 years and know how people are able to live and have 'self respect' and work for there daily bread.. Dont insult africans but do stop pretending that asylum seekers are genuine..most of these well educated economic refugees are loaded otherwise how could they afford the huge agent fees(£5,000-10,000) to get here? Once here they exploit the housing /incapacity/jobseekers benefits, work on the side and send money home to there idle relatives. Its these people who are exploiting this country not poor or working class africans. Please BRITISH GOVERNMENT. Lets reform this abusive 'benefit system' it stinks and is rotten to the core. Take the bull by the horns.

I once had these ideas thinking that these people come here because they are looking for green pastures but ask 90 % of asylum seekers in the UK,they will tell you they want to go to their home country. Home where??? where countries like our own, the russians, french, Americans have colonised politically , economically and continue to even indulge in malicious practices.of supporting rebel groups like the case of Congo, Pakistan, afghanistan and wellknown invasion of Irak. how many Irakies did we see in Uk before the invasion? why did we invade their country? didnt we consider that by so doing they will be running to safety and come here.? let us be realistic how many dictators have we supported in Africa??? how many people choosen leaders have we kicked out and replaced with our own , who will do what we want them to?billions of pounds we have come for those countries, some of our MPS, Senators, companies are directly envolved in setting and fuelling troubles in these countries the best case study is the Congo. we need to be honest with ourselves and say the truth ,yes i know abuses are there. in the 80s i did not see many of these people here because they had some stability, peace in their countries. let us help them stabilise their countries they will give us some peace.

Why should england except all these people who have no connection with the country at all? there as many various reasons: 1) England is not a very big country, and cannot afford for the population to grow. 2) England gives money benefit to the poor people, and why should we pay taxes for people who do not even belong to this country? 3) Honestly go to a bigger country, as england is too small and overcrowded as it is 4) It seems Russia are the hypocrites here, I am Indian and my family has been here for 4 generations and never once have we experienced racism of any sort, England is the most excepting country in the world (unlike Russia) it's full of racists as far as I know, we don't get Nazi groups here like you do there!
