American Joey Chestnut got to celebrate Independence Day in more ways than one, dethroning six-time Hot Dog eating champion Takeru Kobayashi.
The local favourite enjoyed the support of a raucous home crowd at the 92nd annual event, as he looked to not only dethrone the six-time winner but also become the first non-Japanese to win since 1999.
Kobayashi got off to a solid start, but Chestnut was never far behind, with the two eventually breaking away from the other competitors.
The final was down to the wire with the judges having to count scraps on the plate to determine the winner as both competitors devoured exactly 63 hot dogs.
But the reigning champion couldn't digest much of an American delicacy and vomited, leading to a deduction from his point total.
Chestnut stomached 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes and got the coveted trophy, along with the championship belt.
