A crushing defeat of Japan prior to World War II is remembered in tonight’s Historama.

Soviet and Japanese troops clash in Mongolia ahead of World War II

The battle between Japanese and joint Russian-Mongolian troops on the Khalkhyn Gol River started on this day in 1939.

Seven years earlier Japan occupied the Chinese province of Manchuria, setting up a puppet state which the Soviet Union regarded as a base for a possible attack on its territory in the far east.

The conflict started as a frontier dispute between Japan and Mongolia, which bordered Manchuria. The Mongols asked the Soviet Union for help, and the Japanese forces were soon destroyed.

The victory became a big part of Soviet war propaganda ahead of World War II.

­Stalin furious as US cuts war aid three days after Nazi defeat

The first breeze of the Cold War swept over Allied countries on May 11, 1945.

The US pulled the plug on its war aid to the Soviet Union. This consisted of food rations, weapons and factory parts.

Stalin was so furious that the US had to send a special delegation to calm him down.

Aid was promptly resumed, but only lasted for another several months.

This victory over Japan shape coming war in Europe..Plan was to link Japan and Germany nazi Armies true Siberia but Russia demolish Japanize and war agains them in Europe start latter then planed.Hitler was watching with horror how fast Russians finish Japan and according to that take longer time to prepare for war with Russia! The same millitary lidership who win over Japan done the same to Nazi Germany in Europe-Legendary gen.Zhukov and his tim...WW2 for Russia did start on this date!
