An army of zombies and vampires is coming out to play in Moscow as the Russian capital joins in worldwide Halloween celebrations.
Although the Spooky Day is a fairly new thing for most of Russians, the amount of holiday events in late October is growing exponentially year after year.
If in the past Halloween was marked with a couple of costume parties and some trick-or-treat games, now Russians are organizing pretty elaborate activities with sophisticated robes and makeup.
Pre-Halloween days are usually very busy at Moscow School of Body Art.
Youngsters from all over the Russian capital are flocking to the studio, willing to turn into red devils, white witches and proper goblins. Some even arrive ready for cuts, scrapes, fatal gun shot wounds and broken noses – also painted, of course.
While nothing can compete with the regular need for a makeup artist who eliminates the negative and accentuates the positive, there is also an ever-growing demand for creating the grotesque.
“We have far more people interested in this subject now,” Aleksandra Osokina, from the School of Makeup and Body Art, told RT. “There is also strong competition among the makeup designers and photographers.”
Turning into a full-body monster takes hours of painting, but both artists and their “victims” say it is worth it.
“From the beginning, Halloween was more than just a holiday,” makeup artist Darya told RT. “It’s encouraging people to make costumes themselves. It’s a kind of art, which is great.”
Where to party at Halloween
If you have already planned your costumes and make-up, here are some tips on where to head on Halloween night.
Horizon Cinema: British black comedy “Skeletons”
The "best UK film of the year” premiers in Moscow right on Halloween eve.
The surreal tale follows two chaps who dig up skeletons for a living.
The movie’s director, Nick Whitfield, called his heroes "existential Ghostbusters."

The Stella Art Foundation: “Orgy Mystery Theatrer” by Hermann Nitsch
If you want your fair share of gore and horror, head to an exhibition of works by controversial Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch at the Stella Art Foundation gallery.
Appropriately called "Orgy Mystery Theater," the display includes photographs, splatter paintings and film.
Some of Nitsch's works are so outrageous that they have landed him in jail several times.
One performance piece included the slaughtering and skinning of a lamb against a white cloth background.
You Too Club: Hollywood-style bash
The place rolls out the red carpets and paparazzi to welcome zombies from Michael Jackson's “Thriller.” Entrance is free if you are dressed as a movie character.

Arena Club: Freak Halloween
One of Moscow's largest clubs is celebrating the unholy day with world-class drum-and-bass. DJs Spor and Noisia are headlining.
