Hundreds of children have turned out on Moscow's Red Square to welcome Grandfather Frost – the Russian version of Santa Claus. And they were met with a spectacle of festive fun.

Moscow's Red Square, a place long associated with officialdom, transformed into a sparkling ice rink for the festive season. Children from local schools and dance groups entertained a crowd of two-thousand with a theatrical show.

“It's an amazing feeling to take part in this show on Russia's main square,” said Maria Elechova, performer.

Grandfather Frost was welcomed by a crowd of eager and excited children on his first ever visit to Red Square. And as he lit up Moscow's New Year Tree he left behind a little festive magic.

Moscow was the final destination on his New Year tour around Russia's cities that had started in the middle of November in his home town of Veliky Ustug 500 miles northeast of Moscow.
