The Bolshoi Theatre opens its season tonight with one of the most popular Russian operas, “Boris Godunov”, brought together by one of the country’s most revered blue-chip filmmakers, Aleksander Sokurov.

Winner of numerous international awards, the Siberian-born director has made a name for himself as a quintessential Russian filmmaker.

In almost all of his movies, Aleksander Sokurov studies the psychological phenomena of power and will.

He’s made films and documentaries about Hitler, Lenin, Japanese Emperor Hirohito, the first Russian President Boris Yeltsin, legendary Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and the Nobel-prize winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn…

The charisma of one of Russia’s most notorious leaders, Boris Godunov, has long captivated the artist.

The premiere of the classic opera by Sokurov took place in April 2007 – RT brings back the memories of the first night.
