One of Russia’s top conductors, Valery Gergiev, became a household name in the Dutch city of Rotterdam at least 14 years ago, with the first edition of the Gergiev music festival in the Netherlands.
The annual event draws over 20,000 music lovers to Rotterdam, which competes for the title of the country’s cultural hot spot with the official capital Amsterdam.
The 9-day celebration of music features a selection of night concerts and films as well as a special music program aimed at children.
Gergiev will get things rolling on August 29 with an open-air concert in an old harbor of Rotterdam, with singers from the Mariinski Theatre Opera School in the spotlight.
But the undoubted highlight of the Gergiev festival is his performance with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra of Beethoven’s only opera “Fidelio”.
In fact, the maestro has served as the chief guest conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra for 14 years.
Back in 2005, the Queen of the Netherlands, Beatrix, made the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
