Roger Federer and Maria Sharapava have been sent packing from the Sony Ericsson Open. For Federer it must have been like a recurring nightmare, as he lost to the same man who beat him at Indian Wells – Guillermo Canas.

Canas becomes only the 5th person to have back to back wins over Federer as he wrapped things up on a third set tiebreak.

Federer's defeat opens the door for the two Andys – Andy Roddick and Andy Murray.  A day before Murray saved two match points and came from a set down to beat Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.

The top seed also departed in the women's draw, as Serena Williams made a mockery of the rankings – beating Maria Sharapava in straight sets. Williams dismantled the top-seed Russian 6-1, 6-1.

Another Russian, Nadia Petrova, went out to Justin Henin. But Anna Chakvetadze will fly the Russian flag in the semi-finals after she saw off Na Li in the quarters.
