Timed to coincide with St.Patrick’s Day, Ireland’s national holiday on Tuesday March 17, the Irish Film Festival opens in the Russian capital.

It provides a possibility to dive into the culture of Ireland and to get to know what Irish film-making is like today. The programme includes several genres – from comedy to shorts. Many of the films will be shown in Russia for the first time.

Ireland’s ambassador in Russia, Justin Harman, along with actor Dylan Moran and the scriptwriter and actor Mark Doherty will be the opening ceremony’s guests of honour.

Several of the movies are international award winners. Mark Doherty’s “A Film With Me In It” became the main breakthrough at the film festival in Toronto last year. Turner Prize-winning artist Steve McQueen’s “Hunger” (2008), Neil Jordan’s “Crying Game” (1992), Jim Sheridan’s “My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown” (1989) and “The Dead” by John Huston, based on James Joyce’s novel, are among other significant features being shown.

The programme also includes winners of the “Short and is bitter-sweet” contest. Among them are works from shorts gurus Martin McDonagh and Hugh О'Connor.

Audiences will get the chance to question authors, actresses, directors and script writers of the films after watching them.

It’s the second time the festival’s been organized, with the support of the Irish embassy in Moscow. It’s held at the Khudozhestvenny cinema in the centre of Moscow. It runs from March 25 to March 29. All movies will be shown in English with Russian subtitles.
