Russia's population increased last year to 142 million - its first growth in a decade and a half. But according to a recent UN report, it could shrink by 20% before 2050.

Some people just can't help making baby after baby. It wouldn't matter what the environment. It's like you are addicted to it. Many of your children will grow up to resent procreation. I sleep on the floor too, and I'm soon to be evicted, but I am alone, and I don't care. My main concern is that my country doesn't fund equal education so my children would be even more trapped and carry even more stigma. Plus, they say that the top of your genes are affected by your parents, so that would probably put them at risk or they'd "catch" something from me. I don't want children. They would have issues, but I know what you are thinking. But why so many? You are not on a farm. You do not need extra hands to work. Russia only has a low population in ratio to the world. They are more at-risk for being invaded by another and not being able to defend themselves but that would just cause another to occupy the region and a spike in population. I guess they are being indirectly invaded now, and yes, it will cause problems, schisms later on.

That's interesting, but not the first time I have heard it (paying to have children). In the Old World, population decline is all around. In the New World, we can't seem to stop teenagers from having children. The women that are able to escape teenage pregnancy, delay, delay, delay not only child birth but marriage. We're about to have a whole generation of childless women/men and women who gave birth to their 1st child after age 35-40. I for one haven't had any children yet and I'm 39. I have heard many reasons why population growth has slowed in Russia. Society is changing in Russia and many women are adopting Western ideas about lifestyle. In other words, they believe education and career come before husband and child birth, if that's even in the cards. But I also see constantly that women heavily outnumber men, so men are in no rush to get married and have a family. Russian women do not yet have the concept that Western Women share which to have children without a man at all. They store eggs and use fertility clinics, see Octo-Mom Nadya Suleman. I desire to meet a Slavic women and while I decry the Visa policies of Russia and focus more on Ukraine and other Visa-less countries I see Russia as gold mine of women looking for serious long term relationships. However myself being from America (Western Culture) I don't believe I would be there to help Russia's population grow as a relationship would likely result in an American being born, MAYBE with Dual Citizenship, we shall see.

The UN predication is just that a prediction. Russia can reverse th population decline and this data shows that the trend can be and has been reversed. What Russia needs is to increase access to healthy food, invest in daycare and housing and also work hard to rehabilitate the living standards for rural communities and the working poor. Russia should also engage in aggressive targeted immigration policy. Russia is a paradise on earth- it needs to focus its strength. Russia has never fully recovered the massive human loss first in WWII and then after the sudden collapse of the USSR. But now things are looking up for Russia’s demographic growth. This is great news.

If many of her children DO grow up to resent procreation then the problem should be self-correcting, shouldn't it? The earth will be inherited by those alive to inherit it. Nobody can argue with this truism. Telling people how many children they should or should not have is nobody's business in a free society. If you believe that the world is overpopulated then do the right thing and start with yourself.

Russia has to be at the same time more strict on immigration and more open to legalization of immigrants already inside the Russian Federation. For immigrants Russian speaking should have priority, and doors should be opened to Eastern Ukrainians (no visas) If the U.S. included illegal immigrants in the U.S. Census that probably will reach over 310 million people this year, Russia can include to illegal immigrants in the Census that probably would reach 153 million people...

The report is wrong in one thing: birth rates in Russia are similar to Western Europe; what Russia suffers is a too high death rate, a low life expectancy under 70 years, lower than countries like China, Brazil or Mexico, and much lower than Western Europe. Too many people, above all males, die in Russia too early and for different reasons (car accidents, alcoholism etc) Just if Russia had the same life expectancy of Western Europe, natural increase of Russian population would be higher than in Western Europe.

The Russian Federation can reverse their population decline by banning abortions. The problem is not that Russian women don't get pregnant - they do. The problem is that these women use abortions as birth control. End abortions and the Russian populations explodes. Russia should not emulate the foolish immigration policies of America, UK and Sweden - countries which will soon become nonwhite nations because of their massive immigration from nonwhite countries. The American whites are almost in panic because they know that they will become a minority in 30 years. In 1965, whites were 91% of the population of America. Then they changed their immigration laws to shut down immigration from Europe and allow massive immigrantion from the Third World. Today, the white population is barely 60%. Russian people have suffered too long and have made too many sacrifices to turn their beloved Russia into a "multiracial society" as exists in America, UK, or Sweden. America, UK, and Sweden have made the decision to kill off their white society, Russians should not be that foolish.

Uncontrolled immigration can lead to ethnic tensions. Thats not the right answer.Russians are Orthodox Christians. They should use religion to their advantage to ban abortion (should be allowed only in the rarest cases). Also, adoption agencies should come up all over the country so that a pregnant teen does not think of abortion as the only option. The social stigma should be erased through mass campaigning by the Govt.C'mon people, you can do it. After all you are a 100% educated society.
Love from India!!
