In his speech Gorbachev said the recent establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States was the reason for his resignation.

The Jolly Fellows

The first Soviet musical comedy film “The Jolly Fellows” hit Soviet screens on this day in 1934.

The film’s director chose his wife, the leading light of Soviet cinema, beautiful actress Lyubov Orlova for the main role in the cinematic musical.

Both Orlova and her co-star, the Soviet jazz singer and comic actor Leonid Utyosov, rose to stardom after the release of the movie.

The success of “The Jolly Fellows” has actually paved the way for further comedies made in the country, many of which enjoyed international fame.
