December 25: another day of high expectations and lost hopes. Historama takes a look.
Gorbachev’s resignation
After his official resignation, the Red Flag above the Kremlin was taken down and the new Russian tricolor was raised instead.
On December 25, 1991, the first and only President of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, announced his resignation in a live TV address.
However, Gorbachev was too late, as formally there was no longer a country to be president of. Just several days before, eleven of the former Soviet republics had broken away from the Soviet Union.
In his speech Gorbachev said the recent establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States was the reason for his resignation.
The Jolly Fellows
The first Soviet musical comedy film “The Jolly Fellows” hit Soviet screens on this day in 1934.
The film’s director chose his wife, the leading light of Soviet cinema, beautiful actress Lyubov Orlova for the main role in the cinematic musical.
Both Orlova and her co-star, the Soviet jazz singer and comic actor Leonid Utyosov, rose to stardom after the release of the movie.
The success of “The Jolly Fellows” has actually paved the way for further comedies made in the country, many of which enjoyed international fame.
