American scientists have discovered a deadly new virus that has already killed a man in South America. The new form of fever is spread by rodents. The first known victim was a 22-year-old from a rural area of Bolivia.

At first the man thought he had flu. But in just two days his headache and high temperature was accompanied by widespread bleeding.

Doctors say it is related to the viruses that cause Lassa fever.

Last year in South America more than a hundred thousand people caught various forms of fever.
