A homeless man has made something of a splash after his attempt to beat the traffic by cycling across the frozen Moscow River almost ended in tragedy.

As the man was making his crossing, the ice broke and he fell into the freezing water. Rescuers say he sunk to the bottom of the river, as he was clinging on to two rucksacks and a tent that he had been carrying.

The man was hauled onto a rescue boat before being handed to the police once back on dry land. Happily, the 42-year-old apparently felt no ill effects after his unintentional dip.
