The Argentinean tango is a dance of passion and desire, longing and love. The best pairs from around the globe arrived in Moscow to join local couples for the Dance World Cup 2009.
“It's the first time Moscow is hosting this event. For centuries Russians have been renowned for their dancing skills, so it's only natural that this Dance Cup takes place here,” Emilia Seer, Director of the Fred Astaire Dance School in Moscow, said.
Twelve countries were represented, but only a few couples made it to the finals, among them the current champions from Belgium
Competition categories included the popular club dance called “disco-hustle,” salsa and, of course, the tango.
International tango stars like Daniel Noche and Ramona Nita also appeared in the competition, but in a rather unusual set up – a new category was added to the competition for the first time ever – mixed couples, where a professional dancer was paired up with an amateur.
“You can tell everyone's worked really hard, the level of dancing here is very high. We are glad to be here and we are very impressed,” Nita said.
Katya Simonova and Stas Fursov form one of Russia's most famous couples. Even though they've only been dancing together for less than year they've already won several competitions including the European Disco Hustle championship.
And it takes a lot to be this good.
“We devote all our time to dancing. We practice about five hours a day. Our coach and choreographer is very strict. But it's all worth the hard work,” Simonova and Fursov said.
It's paid off indeed, the judges made their call and Katya and Stas were crowned this year's winners of the Disco Hustle Cup.
The many faces of vodkaFor centuries vodka has been at the heart of Russian culture. Songs have been written about the spirit and a whole section of Russian cooking has been developed to compliment it. But what exactly is it? |
