The fifth annual Federal Customs Service competition for dog specialists has kicked off near the Russian capital.
Twelve teams of custom agents and their four-legged friends took part in the contest to award the best of the best when it comes to sniffing out illegal drugs and explosives.
Unlike in real life, this time there was no bad guy – the task is to sniff for illegal items in cars, heavy transport, luggage, buildings, and containers.
The dogs have to be very accurate in focus, but very kind. Chosen based on personality and between 2-months-old and one-year-old puppies, they are trained for one year and then serve Russia for about one decade.
Thanks to the accuracy of these dogs, during the first months of 2010 39 kilos of illegal drugs were seized and in March alone 14 kilos of cocaine from the Dominican Republic were found and taken off the hands of drug dealers.
