The winners of this year’s Golden Mask Awards have been announced in Moscow. Many of Russia’s top performing artists packed into the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre in the capital for the prize-giving ceremony.

Now in its fourteenth year, the Golden Mask Awards is the country’s most anticipated and significant theatre event of the year.
It has 29 categories, covering all the performing arts from drama, opera and ballet to musicals and puppet theatre.

The nominees are selected by a board of experts, including Russian theatre critics.

Among this year’s surprise winners was the Pushkin Drama Theatre Group from the city of Magnitogorsk in the Urals.  They scooped the best short play award for their version of ‘The Storm’ by Alexander Ostrovsky.
