In the not-too-distant future – an estimated ten years – the companies plan to blast a happy couple outside the Earth’s atmosphere for a real wedding, perhaps even with a few guests – though the vacuum-packed catering won’t be cheap.
As on the luxury liners of old, the ship’s captain will perform the marriage, while his co-pilot keeps an eye on the controls.
The shuttle will even include a private honeymoon suite, to where the bride and groom can retire after the festivities.
The Soviet Union sent the first woman, Valentina Tereshkova, into space in 1963, beating the U.S. by 20 years. It is now common to have one or more female cosmonauts or astronauts aboard space missions.
Married astronauts have been to space before, but NASA has kept tight lipped on whether any of them deviated from their mission.
For the lovestruck and loaded, who are looking for something special, a cosmic ceremony could be it.
