The best-selling Russian horror fantasy novel “Night Watch” may be turned into a classical opera hit.
Author of the cult novel, Sergey Lukyanenko, told RIA Novisti news agency he has been offered the chance to write a libretto to his sci-fi epic.
“Night Watch” has previously been turned into a blockbuster by acclaimed Russian director, now working in Hollywood, Timur Bekmambetov. Often described as “Russia’s answer to the Matrix”, it became a box-office phenomenon in 2004.
Lukyanenko says he was contacted by the director of Vienna Opera House as well as by a Finnish producer whose name he cannot yet reveal.
The 41-year-old writer explained that although it’s supposed to be a classical production, it will be filled with special effects.
“It’s expected to be a bright, entertaining opera set to classical music, but aimed at young people,” Lukyanenko told RIA.
It’s not yet clear who will be chosen as the stage-director of “Night Watch” until the libretto is written.
Lukyanenko says it’s his first-ever experience in the opera field. When completed, his work will be translated into Italian and English, and is likely to be staged in several European theatres.
