Caviar vending machines will be popping up all over Moscow very soon.
Hungry Muscovites and visitors to the city will be able to pick up a jar of the red stuff for between 150 and 250 rubles ($5-7).
The machines are meant to make Russia’s renowned delicacy accessible to more people. Tourists might also be interested, though red caviar is readily available the world over.
The machines' locations have not yet been decided, but they are likely to appear in Metro passageways around the city center.
But the project could face some unique problems – like hungry vandals with expensive tastes, requiring virtually every machine to have its own security guard. And a representative of the machine's producer added that making such a machine proved to be quite difficult because it needs to maintain an unusually low temperature – about 5 degrees Celsius.
One such machine was installed in a Moscow government office in May 2010. The machine's success was not hampered even by steep prices – the demand proved to be too high. The machine was unable to keep up with the rush of orders, and broke down just two days after it was installed.
The same machines are now installed in several business centers in the capital.
