The police have shut down an illegal gambling den just off New Arbat Street in Moscow.
It was located in an unmarked non-residential building. The racket made an estimated profit of $4 million.
Only gamblers who had been vouched for by a trusted client were allowed into the casino but this did not stop undercover police officers from getting inside.
New Arbat used to host Russia's largest casinos until 2009, when gambling was outlawed. The new law limited gambling to four special zones: Vladivostok, Krasnodar Region, Kaliningrad and the Altai Region.
In July 2011, President Dmitry Medvedev signed the law upping the punishment for the entrepreneurs behind illegal gambling houses. Operators of such casinos now face a $12,000 fine and up to three years in prison. The law also forbids gambling Internet sites based outside the legal gambling zones.
