Bands from the UK and Ireland keep on pushing towards the Russian capital. Legends of British punk-folk the Pogues come to Moscow for the fist time to present the audience with their best-ever hits.
Moscow’s Milk Club will host the event long-awaited by thousands of the band’s fans in Russia. One of the founders of punk-folk, the band’s roots lie in London’s King’s Cross. Back in the middle 1970s when punk-rock was on the rise with such legends as the Ramones in New York, and the Sex Pistols and The Clash in London, the future developers of punk-folk randomly met at one of the Ramones’ gigs.
Founded in 1982, the Pogues (a band of Irish background) with their trademark vocalist and songwriter Shane MacGowan, have recorded a total of eight studio albums. In the late 1980s, the Pogues were at the peak of their commercial success. Their Christmas hit "Fairytale of New York" was voted "the best Christmas song ever" in VH1 UK polls in 2004.
However, front-man MacGowan was becoming a major problem to the band due to alcohol and drugs problems. He failed to turn up for the opening of 1988’s American tour, preventing the band from promoting their next album. In 1991, the band was invited to be the warm-up act on Bob Dylan’s tour. But a true punk, MacGowan jagged again and failed to board the plane. The band played all the gigs without their vocalist. Later the band decided to sack him.
The Pogues have also been involved into cinema work, creating soundtracks. Among those was work on Alex Cox’s “Sid and Nancy”, a classic biopic about Sex Pistols’ bassist Sid Vicious.
The band, including MacGowan, reunited for a Christmas tour in 2001. Since then, the band has received mixed reviews, however if you are into punk, rock and landmark music of the 1980s, the Pogues are well worth a look. They were named by Q magazine as one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die".
As the gig in the capital is due to become the band’s first ever performance in Russia, the show promises to be memorable indeed. Milk Moscow, Sunday August 29.
