The Interior Minister says the number of attacks on police in Russia doubled in 2011 compared with 2010.

“There were over 6,000 attacks against police in 2011,” said Rashid Nurgaliev. “This is a challenge – and we are facing it.”

The number of the police seeking protection for themselves and their families increased by at least a third. Nurgaliev promised a heavy-handed crackdown on this kind of crime.

The public, however, believe that the main reason for such an increase is the conduct of police officers themselves, as well as the recent police reforms that changed the police force in name, but not its corrupt nature. Over 5,000 crimes were committed by policemen in 2011, and this figure only accounts for those officially reported.

“I think there are two reasons for this spike in assaults,” Vladimir Utkin, professor of criminology, told RT. “First of all, some people are obviously unhappy with how the cops behave. And secondly, the police have become more active when it comes to protecting citizens. And this positive change is the main reason.”

RT would make a huge deal about this if it happened in America! They hardly ever report on any of the police crimes in russia, and when they do they mention it in passing at best, they're just fixated on america and can barely withhold their resentment for american police.
