A 14th century monastery in Ukraine, which has fallen victim to robbery and neglect, is in danger of disappearing altogether. With pleas for government help unanswered, parishioners say the ancient monument may not last the winter.

The ancient monastery of Surb Hach is located in a high-mountain area, which is not on the tourist map of Crimea, but many people still go there. Local Armenians built the temple in the 14th century, and eventually it became their spiritual centre. But six centuries on, the historical monument is gradually falling apart.

The local authorities have asked Kiev for $US1.5 MLN to restore the monastery, but have not received a reply. For now, parishioners use their own money to help protect the sacred place. However, they say, their efforts are not enough to save it.
