Every Russian's fingerprints may soon be collected into a comprehensive database as the country's investigative committee claims this will make searching for criminals and identifying them easier.

Aleksandr Bastrykin, chief deputy prosecutor of the Russian Federation, has announced that he would like to see a national fingerprint database of residents. The measure comes in addition to a new visa regulation that requires all foreigners who want to reside in the Russian Federation to provide their fingerprints when applying for a visa or work permit.

Talking about the project, Bastrykin cited the chief investigator of the terrorist attack on the “Nevsky Express,” the train traveling from Moscow to St. Petersburg that was blown up late last year. The investigator has claimed that the criminals would have been found much quicker had such a database already been in existence.

The Russian government said that around 70 percent of all Russian citizens are in favor of the measure. However, judging from the experience of other countries, the issue is not that easy.

In the United Kingdom, when Tony Blair proposed the introduction of identity cards, the population split into two camps – those that said they had nothing to hide, and those who were shocked by the measure arguing, they were no criminals.

Russians, too, are not quite sure they want to be subjected to such procedures.

People on the streets of Russia told RT that they do not like to be controlled and put under pressure. Moreover, even though the procedure can really make the search for criminals easier, at the same time it is clearly a breach of human rights.

Others, however, believe that the measure will be more effective than a passport because it will better be able to help control people.

Hmmm....Dont criminals usually wear gloves or ski masks...Does this mean that every citizen will be suspected of being a potential criminal who cannot be trusted so ...seems Russia is no different than the west now with all these new legislations and lack of trust in people which is an insult to law abiding citizens. You should only be fingerprinted or have a mug shot taken when you are actually charged with something..The west is now becoming a totalitarian sector of the globe by stealth and underhanded legislation without the issue of ethics or morality and dignity towards people in general. Yeah we know that something has to be done to combat crime but are we going to allow the minority who make our lives a misery with crime force us to live like slaves to legislation...Constant legislation is the very destruction of values of freedom....The rule of the tyrant is by using every problem as an opportunity to bring in new acts of power and leglislation to enable control. Stalin is dead...Russia has only been free in a true since since around 2000 under Putin and now Medvedev. This is a backward step.Blanket legislation will send russia down the path backwards. Innocent until proven guilty and NOT suspect until proven innocent!

Why? Is Russia an ongoing war zone? , this is war zone policy. Are the problems so extreme that this sort of policy is required? Crime can't be a reason, overall crime rates have dropped. I see the claim that Crime by foreign workers has risen, so what, economies downturn crime is bound to spike So fingerprint everyone? Russia is better than this policy. i know that every other second nation is proposing this, but what if it keeps away the expat workers of a particular skilled field that Russia needs? If you wait you will see, let the others lock down. there is a great saying ' to be a leader is to sometimes lead by walking the other way'. don't know who said it? i think i just made it up, hey i'm Irish.
