Jamaican-born bass-baritone Sir Willard White will become Mariinsky’s "Artist of the Month" and will try to reach the deepest depths of the listeners with his voice when he performs “Tristan and Isolde” on December 23.

As part of the “Artist of the Month” project, the Mariinsky Theater each month invites stars from around the world who have not yet performed in St. Petersburg or Russia at all.

“In choosing the artists we invite, we first of all consider whether it’s a significant name,” announced the theater’s press service.

White, whose huge repertoire includes the bass-baritone roles in operas by Monteverdi, Handel, Henze, Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, Debussy, Shostakovich, Mussorgsky, Prokofiev and others, will be performing King Marke’s part in Richard Wagner’s “Tristan and Isolde.”

The famous bass part by White will be accompanied by Mariinsky Theater soloists Edem Umerov, Larisa Gogolevskaya, Leonid Zakhozhaev, Olga Savova and Yury Alekseev. Maestro Valery Gergiev will conduct the concert.

White was born in Jamaica and started studying opera singing there. He later moved to New York, where he soon became a soloist at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Now the singer also performs at the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden), Metropolitan Opera, English National Opera, San Francisco Opera and many other theaters.

White’s best-known acts are the part of Mephistopheles in “Faust,” Kutuzov in "War and Peace" and Bluebeard in "Duke Bluebeard's Castle."

He received the title of knight of the British Empire in 1995.
