The latest film from award-winning director Wong Kar-Wai is making waves as it prepares to hit Russian screens. Based on the director's 1994 work “The Ashes of Time”, it could surprise today’s audience.
Wong Kar-Wai is an award winning Hong Kong film director, internationally renowned for his visually unique, highly stylised films.
The new film is called “Ashes of Time Redux”. Wong Kar-Wai has decided to extend and re-edit the original movie using new ideas and technologies.
The new version of the film was praised at the Cannes Festival this spring.
“The Ashes of Time” is a story of a man who escapes to the desert when the woman of his life rejects him.
He hires a skilled swordsman to organise a contract killing.
It seems life made him pitiless and cynical, but as the story unravels, encounters with friends, clients and even future enemies make the central character more conscious of his solitude.
Recent movie ‘reduxes’ have included the 2006 version of ‘Casino Royale’, ‘Batman Begins’ and the box office record-breaker ‘Dark Knight’. Rather than simply denoting a sequel or prequel, the term relates to the retelling of an established storyline, or the re-introduction of existing characters, places or mythologies.
The wuxia (literally meaning “martial arts heroes”) film “Ashes of Time” opens in Russian cinemas this week.
