The first Polish centre in Russia has been opened in St Petersburg. First ladies of Russia and Poland took part in the ceremony – Lyudmila Putina and Maria Kaczynski cut the ribbon at the centre.

Ms Kaczynski said she is happy that the Polish community in the city now has a focal point.

St Petersburg has the only Polish language school in Russia and ties between the city and Poland are strong.

The centre will have a library, a collection of films and will promote Polish culture.
