Failure is not an option for Pakistan. The state is facing its biggest crisis in many years, maybe its biggest crisis ever. Fundamentalists and foreign insurgents inside its borders, India on the right which 'wants its land back', and the US on its left who want to remove Pakistani 'nuclear teeth'. The US are already crossing the border in the form of 'special forces units', missile armed drones, and now even private security firms who are confident enough to wander and be seen in cities. The US then have the cheek to offer financial aid (or is that money to buy off the weak government?). Pakistan are in a dangerous position and they know it, that's why this attack on militant strongholds appears genuine and purposeful. If they defeat the militants they will be in a stronger position to resist US interference.
