McDonald's in Moscow, 1990

McDonald’s came to the USSR as a first sign of freedom two decades ago.

This is a dreadful sight! I live in the West and I have not been inside McDonald’s for 20 years! I saw McDonald's in Moscow in my recent visit there but I did not visit one either while in Russia. For me when I think about "M" the letter in relation to Russia/Moscow it signifies the Moscow Metro not McDonald!

The food is poison...I mean that literally. Its nothing but salt, fat and processed grains! It is TERRIBLE for you. They get you in there with the toys for the kids. Its shameful. I know what I'm talking about, I've lost over 100 pounds, and I used to eat a sausage bisquit every day. You Russians have real organic food, a big agriculture, you have something so precious, why are you going to give that up? You have to be rich in America to afford food like that, and you can bet your last rouble no one rich eats at McDonalds here. Oh well, people always think the pasture is greener on the other side of the fence.

An American Professor of Sovreignty described to me once how the Cold war was a special pantomime of human tensions. The USSR's role being to manifest social principles of iconic ideology while the USA's guide to humanitarian investment was to look to satisfaction from the belly on down. Pie in the sky and mordonald's streetside popularity of snack seem insidiouly intwined.

The McDonalds I have been too over there are a little different from the ones here in America I think. The food quality is better in Minsk than in Moscow but it is still nasty stuff that is bad for you. Grease, salt and sugar. Grab a shurma, it tastes better and is 1000 times better for you.

This is disgusting poison. When I was a kid, i remember going to the fist Moscow McDees and I was amazed. Of course then, when I grew up, I learned what horrible food it is and how it poisons millions of people around the world with grease, fat, horrible quality beef made in corporate environment type "farms". Eat at McDees and your heart will hate you for it. Also, McDees is NOT about Western values, far from it, in America they've embraced the most left wing, anti-majority culture imaginable. For example they cater exclusively to blacks, even made a site, www.365black.com, to cater to blacks in America while insulting and abandoning the true majority of their customers. Which isn't a bad thing after all! For Americans, please watch the movie "Food Inc." which shows what McDonalds has done to American farmers and the meat quality. You'll never want to eat there again. I have no idea where they get the beef for Russia...

FUNNY!!!!!!!!!! These are the funniest comments I have ever seen in RT......EVER!...lol Especially the comments from Americans.....lol I have visited some McDonnalds resturautnts in Russia and Ukraine and people love it and they are always packed with kids, teenagers ...well, people of all ages I can say...at any time of the day and nigh. So I guess it is safe to say that the comments here represent a very very small group of people...lol.... Thank you RT

Thanks for the great report. It's not about the food, but about the freedom. McDonalds is a symbol of the U.S. For the folks that think this is about the food. Too much of any thing is not good. You will die no matter what. So enjoy life and do everything in moderation.

The above comments only give proof of american ignorance. In many other nations McDonalds is different, healthier (yet not healthy to say). Nevertheless, half the people that commented did not even notice the point of the article--McDonalds represented culture, America and a new opportunity to those in the Soviet Union for so many years.
