Latvians stage shoe-throwing protest

Residents of the Latvian city of Daugavpils have thrown shoes at a photo of the country’s parliament, the Saeima, in protest against the inefficient economic policy of the government and the local authorities.










When the emotion of the moment has exhausted itself, as it is likely to soon enough, Latvians will be able to fall back on the far more effective way of democratic elections to change their government if they wish. That is the huge value of the democratic process -- it gives ordinary citizens a legitimate and effective way to collectively determine who governs them.
