“Individual security should come first”

Individual security and observance of basic human rights are essential and should be given serious attention, together with global security issues, believes Jayantha Dhanapala from the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.

Spot on - What we want is Security,Stability and Prosperity. The Security is the big first one. We have dealt to a large extent with national security, and now it is time for individual security. We need an end to the protection rackets, end to forced company share transfer, end to abuse of lower level officials power against citizens.... Yes the rewards are big for the ones who can cut it in our wild 'east' but it isn't sustainable long term, and is a disabler for the nation long term, there is no doubt. So let's go big on individual security to match the great gains we have made in stability in the last 10 years. As of now, we know that the state cannot protect us in any way from the wolves and worse often state actors are the villains themselves, so we look after ourselves, avoid the state, and have our 'friends'. I certainly don't want to get into the docile European model, where the state is expected to do everything, with the publics brain removed. But I do want the state to be the active state and abide by rules and behaviour that supports our citizens as citizens. We as people cannot fix this, the state has to fix it themselves with an iron fist over the people they control. They then have to get their actors to go after the racketeers in a robust and effective ways, not be part of them. Give me this in the next ten years, then amazingly you will see prosperity coming. There have been great strides in freeing up business, now let the state protect these valuable gains and allow people to genuinely take advantage of the great business opportunities that exist today all around us.
