Onlookers in central Moscow watched in alarm as fire fighters stormed into Russia's first ever McDonalds in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Famous for drawing record queues in the early 1990s, one of the city's landmarks appeared to have had its chips.

But the thick fumes rising from the roof were a false alarm.

Early indications suggest a problem with the ventilation system was responsible for the smoke.
