Sochi summit seeks to break curse of Afghan heroin

President Dmitry Medvedev is hosting a summit on terrorism and drug trafficking in Russia's city of Sochi with the leaders of Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Pakistan.










As the World Drug Report of 2009 demonstrates, the Taliban almost eradicated opium production by 2001, but after the U.S. invasion drug production increased not just to previous levels (about 70,000 hectares of land for opium) but over twice the previous levels (reaching 190.000 hectares in 2008) That has caused a high cost in lifes, Social Security and criminal activity to the Russian Federation.
