Ben Bernanke,Chairman of the United States Federal Reserve, has made it crystal clear that the future economic policy of the USA is a cheap dollar policy. The massive increase in the dollar supply he plans will lead to a rapid devaluation of the dollar against some major currencies but not all. The Dollar Renminbi rate is fixed by the Chinese government. The Japanese government is already attempting to manipulate the rate of exchange of the Yen against the dollar. So it is on the Euro that the effect is likely to be most pronounced. The EU trade surpluses with the USA will disappear as will millions of jobs in Europe . Political relations between the USA and Europe will certainly suffer an explosive decompression. I hope the Russian political elites are ready renew the call for all European states to work together for the good of the people of Europe. An idea whose time is coming in part due to the growing financial Autarchy of the government of the USA.

This is an excellent development. Germany, France and Russia find themselves limited by un-democratic processes in the EU and NATO, where small Nations are carrying way too much weight in the decision process. On top of that many smaller nations are under the washington grip, acting in many cases against old european values and norms. Indeed often they are sabotaging developments under direct Washington orders. So France and Germany stepping up above the crowd and asserting themselves as the great nations they are, in championing the true European values and their own interests is long overdue. Indeed I don't think it should in the end be limited to them, I think many other Old European nations, can also join the example and step up to work with Russia and create a real European critical mass, backed by stable capable large nations. Just look at the population additions of France, Germany, Italy and say Spain with Russia augmented by the nuclear capability of Russia. That is a superpower alliance. One that can allow Germany, France ... to break away from the Washington controlling grip and develop their own agenda and policies which are in lign with the interests of old europe and Russia. There is room and grouping for a core Europe to exert its political influence on the world. There are opportunities here, for old Europe to move forward guided by the likes of Germany and France in the first instance. The US has always acted to limit old Europe to allow them to have some say, but not too much, to be able to be the quiet, controlled consumer of US goods and services. But not to have any real political say in the world. Partnering with Russia offers old europe the chance to step past the control freak Washington drunk on the sidewalk, who will always start a fight to keep old europe in its place. They need Russia to step past the power drunk! Sometimes you need see past the problem to get to the future, not stay fighting within it. That is vision!

It is great to see Russia meeting with the two leading EU nations. Even with their problems, France and Germany are the EU leaders. Germany still has a great industrial reputation. France is still a major cultural influence on the world. Too bad Italian primeminister Berlusconi did not attend too. Oh, my favourite world leaders are (1) President Medvedev, (2) Prime Minister Putin, (3) President Sarcosy, (4) Prime Minister Berlusconi and (5) maybe, President Obama ( subject to change)

I see things completely differently. Angela Merkel and Sarkozy are both neo-cons. When Germany got the presidency of the European Union few years back, she asked the European countries to mend ties with the USA. Hey, business first, right? What kind of message did that send to war criminals such as Cheney and Bush? And Sarkozy as soon as he was elected President of France, he rushed to Washington to give a speech to the American Congress. Another message of friendship to the most criminal country in the world. They voted against the Goldman Report condemning Israel for war crimes committed in Gaza. No fairness. They are followers and puppets of the USA. But now that the US has nothing to offer any more as the empire is falling, they turn toward Russia like marionettes. NATO is under the control of the Pentagon so I don't see the necessity for Russia to get into the organisation. Russia will lose its soul and integrity should it decide to follow NATO and the EU. Doing business is one thing but to prostitute yourself is another. The 5+1 are those who want more than anything to invade Iran. Will Russia follow? This is all a trick. United States is a country to be forgotten but never forgiven. It has killed too many innocent people on this planet for too long. By the way, I never hear the EU complain about all the killing of civilians in Pakistan by american drones. Why?

Luisa, You are broadly right. Jacques Chirac and Gerhard Schroeder tried to build European Defense headquarters apart from the NATO and a Common Defense in Europe including the Russian Federation...but the U.S. Dictatorship didn´t accept that and the result was Sarkozy which ended with French autonomy in NATO. Merkel also worked first against the great pro-European Chancellor Helmut Kohl, and then against German increasing sovereignty. The way in which Merkel launched her attacks against Helmut Kohl because he had become too much respected in Germany and Europe as the Father of Reunification, and the way in which Sakozy launched his attacks against Jacques Chirac because Chirac was a Gaullist which led the road towards an Autonomous European Defense, show clearly what they are. James Stravidis, Supreme Allied Commander of NATO-Europe, is a Dictator very similar to the British Viceroys in India. But America´s financial weakness and its need to project its force in the Pacific will lead to changes. America now is not as strong as decades ago, and will have to share Power. Peace in Europe need the participation of Russia.
