The check-in desks at Moscow's Domodedovo airport are packed with customers, like any other time. More than 40,000 pass through every day.But on Tuesday, Russia's busiest travel hub celebrated a special milestone.
Ekaterina Gaidukova has been flying from Domodedovo for years but she's never likely to forget her flight to Ekaterinburg. The 27-year-old was Domodedovo's 100 millionth passenger.
“I can't believe this. I often fly through Domodedovo, but I never expected to be the 100 millionth traveller. I've never won anything in my life,” said the surprised winner.
For Ekaterina the event means a prize – an all-expenses-paid trip to Greece for two – and special celebration. For Domodedovo it's an important milestone. It's taken the airport 14 years to reach it.
But the next 100 million are likely to arrive a whole lot faster. Passenger numbers are steadily increasing and new building projects mean Domodedovo will double in size in the next five years, making it one of the largest airports in Europe.
