On January 1st, Estonia will become the 17th country to join the Euro community. It has taken years of economic reform and government spending cuts to reach this step, but many still doubt that Estonia is ready for it.

RT’s attitude towards Estonia daring to succeed and progress is comical. Most former colonial powers are happy when their one-time colonies succeed. Russia seems to have precisely the opposite attitude – it appears to be mightily annoyed when its former colonies get on well in the world. RT has run three articles about Estonia’s accession to the Euro zone. The first, from 27 July was entitled “Euro for Estonia: ready or not, here it comes”, and reports several negative opinions from Estonia about adopting the new currency, and a further negative opinion from someone who is nostalgic about leaving the existing currency. The second article is from 20 September entitled “Estonia’s decision to join Euro zone badly timed – professor,” and reports comments from an Estonian academic lamenting the timing of the move. The third article is the current one of 23 September entitled, “Putting in their two euro cents’ worth: Estonians split over currency change,” and re-hashes the previously published gloom and doom. Guess there is nothing positive about the subject at all, else RT would have reported it already. The theme which unifies all three articles is an ostentatious concern for and lament over Estonia’s welfare and future. But as Russia has never before been known to suffer any angst over Estonia’s well-being, its newly-found sensitivity is odd.
