A Russian tanker is carrying an emergency fuel delivery through thick ice to the Alaskan city of Nome, where a severe storm has left roughly 3,500 people without enough fuel to last through the harsh northern winter.

The Renda set out in December and is now less than 200 nautical miles from its destination. Accompanied by a Coast Guard icebreaker Healy, it is carrying more than 3.8 million liters of petroleum.

On January 6, the Renda encountered ice in the eastern Bering Sea, but is more than capable of making it through – even if the ice is several feet thick.

For the Russian tanker to successfully complete its mission, all parties involved must constantly work on refining the best plan of action. That includes ship owners and agents, crews of both the Renda and the Healy as well as Alaskan Marine Pilots.

A team of public and private specialists has been working hard on the logistics of the venture, with weather and ice routing experts from all over the world supplying the mission with daily updates.

The mission is due to reach Nome by Monday morning, and will be marked as the first ever fuel delivery to Western Alaska in the heart of winter.

New Yorker This story will not be greatly reflected in the U.S corporate media because it has the potential to highlight reality of the 99% of U.S citizens as the nation’s resources are mobilized in imperial projects—ordinary Americans are left behind. Why are we surprised there was no immediate plan B to bring fuel to this remote community by the authorities in Alaska? Do people remember what happened after the Hurricane Katrina? It is fact many European countries including Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands have offered immediate humanitarian assistant to the people hit by the disaster of Hurricane Katrina but the administration of GWB rejected foreign aide for political reasons. The fact today the United States has 70M citizens with no access to basic medical services suggest that this town is very lucky to receive this much needed Russians aide. Hurricane Katrina showed without the shadow of the doubt that the U.S empire was finished and done for but the 1% elite in the U.S still wants to act as the U.S the undisputed global leader and “spreading democracy” is one of its global mission. Ironically many in the Middle East and even in Russia are purchasing these lies and spins. P/S. Russians got help and it was to help few oligarchs loot the country- and Bill Clinton advised the Russians to get used to their new status( on record).

The story is on all major networks.  ABC, FOX, on both TV and Websites.  As for the US not willing to help Russia, when they had the submarine that went down we had the technology to help and they refused it.  Russia and the US are Allies and have been since WW II.  But like all countries we look after our best interest and they look after their own best interest. Both of which is the smart thing to do.  Now if only the leaders of both our countries realize that it is in our best interest to work together.
