Summing up the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, President Dmitry Medvedev and the event’s main guest, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, spoke on a new monetary system and the EU’s approach towards Russia.
Congratulations!
When I was a young boy, about 63 years ago the world was a scary place. The cold war was very active. I had no idea that one day I would be communicating in a Russian newspaper, with Russian people. I feel very honoured to be able to have this experience. Once again, our world has become a difficult place for us to live in peace. It is my hope that all nations here and now would benefit from a renewed joint effort to work together in order that these many problems will be acknowledged and resolved. A monumental task for all nations, this I am most certain of. Congratulations everyone! Let us begin to build a better world.

What is truly good to see, is some European leaders waking up to the real world. That Russia and the EU are mutually beneficial partners going forward, and that a US centric world is not an option, if we all want a stable robust economic future. We need a basket of currencies and checks and balances in the foreign exchange markets. This doesn't mean work against the US, it just means that the US will have to compete in the world, just like everyone else, which in fact is actually good for the US. Europe and Russia moving forward together is a great prospect, Russia offers growth potential for Europe, and Europe for Russia. Working together also avoids useless misapplication of effort in terms of wasted opposing security. For stability the world needs diversified poles, reflected in currencies, economics ... Russia is a fantastic market for Europe, it is a chance to enter an under-developed arena, where gains can be great. The same goes for Russia which already has great hydrocarbon ties, but can enhance those with space, aircraft and other growing technologies. There are synergies and they should be exploited. There are dangers too, and these must be addressed, the process must be equal, if we are to move forward, without that, it will not work. Both players need to feel mutual advantage in real terms. That is the key thing to realise, and it is the key thing to make and demonstrate that it has happened, a true partnership for good economics. Now on moving back to Russia. We only move back when there is sufficient advantage to us, that is the truth. When you are doing very well in the west, you will stay there, unless you see better back in Russia. In my case I had moved across into business, and in those terms, Russia is fantastic, for all the reasons I have said above about European opportunities in Russia. It is easy in busienss to move here with capital and make more and more. But for pure scientists it isn't advantageous enough yet! So let's build it!
