City freezes after power plant fire

A state of emergency has been declared in the city of Severo in Russia’s Far East after a power station blaze left thousands of people without heat or electricity.

Firefighters have put out a fire at an electricity substation in Moscow, which threatened the capital’s power supply. The blaze started while new equipment was being tested at the Chagino plant in the south-east of the city.
One person has died and at least 18 others were injured after an explosion at a factory in the Novosibirsk region on Tuesday. An investigation is underway into what caused the blast at the chemical fibre factory.
Three people have been killed, and one injured, when a concrete factory wall collapsed in Stavropol.
