Tensions are mounting over British plans to start oil production near the Falkland Islands. London says drilling will start on Sunday despite Argentina's vehement opposition.
British like most of West Europeans (France ,Duch,Spain,Portugal etc, etc) been involved in land grab all over the world, when no international law egsisted...It was done with brutal force wich was the only law to count(same rule is valid today)...Im short about history of this Falkland Islands but at modern and present law they do rightfully belong to UK! Wrong or right thats how law said. Any ajustment about who is rightfull owner of this Islands(and hidrocarbons) will lead to war! There is always a way to live and to let others to live but will politicans be wise and not as before choose war instead of peace...The time ahead will tel us! Thanke you!
Shortly after the Falklands war the British government informally agreed (in principle) to joint oil exploration / extraction in the region with Argentina. It now appears that my Government wishes to 'go it alone'. The sabre rattling from the Agrentinians is most likely a way of communicating their anger / frustration. The Argentinians are in no position to engage in a conflict with the UK over the Falklands. The Falklands is now well protected and garrisoned, and the region is regularly visited by British nuclear subermarines, just in case the 'Argies' as we call them need reminding it nis sovereign British territory. There is potentially billions of dollars worth of oil in this area, and their is no way the Brits will give this up. In the first Falklands war the British underestimated the Argentinian airforce and lost several capital ships as a result to air launched anti-ship missiles. In a future conflict the British would be unlikely to 'play fair' as they simply cannot afford to. It is likely the British would obliterate the Argentinian airforce, navy, and its expeditionary capacity in general by a combination of submarine and ship launched cruise missiles (conventional of course), and special forces raids. It will however never come to that.
And can you imagine operating drilling rigs in that environment; here today, gone tomorrow! Sometimes better to share the cake, rather than see it falling on the floor, in a little tug of war. Everything is not sometimes as clear cut as people make out.
Zak, you really are short about the history of the Malvinas. Britain recognized Argentina in 1825 through a treaty of Peace and Friendship. By then, Argentina had already claimed the islands as the successor state to the spanish vice-royalty of the Rio de la Plata. So Britain recognized the islands as part of Argentina lawfully. Then in 1833 the argentinian settlement was taken over by british forces. Since then, we've been claiming the return of our land in all international forums. The UN has passed several resolutions, before and after the 1982 war, forcing both parts to discuss the sovereignty of the islands. And yet, Britain refuses to accept those resolutions. As usual, the powerful nations ignore the UN. And Bob is right. Argentina is not willing nor able to take the islands by force. Britain might be stretched between Afghanistan and Irak, but Argentina is just not able to conduct an important war. What Argentina wants is what has been agreed before, a joint exploitation of the resources while the island sovereignty is discussed.
Free world must help Argentina, at least sell them some big guns. U.K must go back to their own island. There is simply no corner in the world that U.K didn't do some major damage.
Colonialism should be over. England lost the colonies that they so richly exploited their resources and utilized slave labor to keep the royalty owning everything. We have heard this old tune before and it is getting old. England should be satisfied with their little European Island state and leave America alone. Americans do not want any foreign country claiming territory in the Western Hemisphere. Royal exploitation was a cruel and criminal dark spot in world history. Most of the world problems today have their roots in royalty exploitation of people around the world. The English should carry their ROYALTY EXPLOITATION SELVES out of the Falklands and back to their little royal island off the coast of Europe. Americans, both North and South America, do not want you here. Go exploit yourselves.
Tell you what let’s make a deal if Russia gives back the Kirill Islands which they snatched from Japan in 1945, plus Kaliningrad which they snatched from Germany again in 1945 and Abkhazia/South Ossetia which they snatched from Georgia in 2008, then Britain will give back the Falkland what do you think? Also Britain would take any Argentinean invasion force apart, this time there’s 60 billion barrels of oil to defend this is the harsh reality of protecting a national asset
John, I am sure the Russians will happily give Kaliningrad back to Germany... as soon as Germany brings back to life the 20 million Soviets they killed during WWII. The Kiril islands was a small price for Japan to pay for its military adventurism... If I was Russia I would rather give them to the Chinese than the Japanese. And Abkhazia and South Ossetia are independent states with good relations with Russia. They are only considered to be part of Georgia because Joseph Stalin decided they were. Don't you think it is strange that a province called South Ossetia which is located to the South of a province of the Russian Federation called North Ossetia should be part of a country called Georgia that is populated not by Ossetians, but by Georgians? Equally if they truely belonged together why was it necessary for the tie eater to use force? Sounds like the Argentines should buy some Su-35S 's and a few Brahmos missiles too.
You can't do a deal with us, you need to deal with the Argentinians on ths one. Gone are the days of the great power games. Enjoy! we will!
Argentina is now looking for talks the arrival of the powerful British Destroyer the Duke of York has shown them that Britain will fight, so forget this rubbish about Argentina buying missiles they know what the outcome would be in any confrontation, British Naval power would prevail, Britain still has the most powerful navy of any of the European NATO countries. One thing some of you have not considered is this; 99% of the people who live on the Falkland Islands want to remain part of Britain, Reading some of the posts here it would appear their democratic rights count for nothing, still this does not surprise me, after all this is a Russian web site and democracy is still a new and somewhat alien concept.
Oil, Oil, Oil. Wherever this stuff is found in large quantities you can be sure that large quantities of blood are being spilt, or are at risk of being spilt too. I hope that this doesn't happen here. Fortunately I see little if any risk of a military confrontation. The UK still has a capable expeditionary capacity and an advanced surface and submarine fleet, so is quite able to protect these little Islands in the South Atlantic, and the Argentinians will not risk a direct military confrontation for risk of loosing any defensive military capacity they currently have. The most they could do is complain to the UN (waste of time as the UK have too much influence), or impose a shipping exclusion zone / economic embargo around their own territorial waters (waste of time and counterproductive). What the Argentinians really want is a fair share of the oil off their coast. With the UK running low on funds right now they are selfishly guarding any oil revenue, however it may actually be benificial in the long term to undertake a joint venture with Argentina. I shall watch future developments with interest.
The red coat blokes need to leave Argentina and give up their quest to colonize America. You blokes lost all the wars in America and went back to your home island to serve the queen. You have been relegated to the dust bin of history. Don't embarass or frustrate your queen any further. Leave America.
Mr Colony the Falklands are not in Argentina they are Islands 400 miles off the coast, when the people who have lived on the Falklands for generations ask Britain to leave through a referendum, then Britain will go, but as 99% of the population want to remain British their democratic rights will be observed. Funny how you Russians and your cohorts “raved” on about the rights of Abkhazians and Ossetians in 2008, but couldn’t give a stuff about the rights of British people, you are only democratic when it suits your geo political aspirations, at least Britain is consistent we fought a war with Argentina in 1982 to defend "our" people and will do it again if Argentina pushes its luck. This time in will be on our terms, on the open seas and Argentina would have 0 chance of setting a foot on British sovereign territory,
Are you really consistant, did you support the rights of South Ossetians and Abkhazia to self determination? Strange how the real hypocrit is quickly uncovered! So what has the Russian government indicated about the Falklands? What has the British Government indicated about South Ossetia? The British are only consistent in their hypocrisy, but like to shout alot about others so called hypocirsy! A bit like we need to imprison terrorists for killing people (Lockerbie), but hey Israel have a passport to do what we are complaining about! We are just British hypocrits, don't mind us old chap!
Count Cash, A lot of British citizens are certainly not in the 'hypocritical' camp. A great many (but unfortunatly no way near enough - yet) are greatly concerned about just how close we have become to the USA. We managed to force the grand lier and self appointed 'Christian warrior' Blair to step down as our Prime Minister, we got our troops out of Iraq, we managed to kick up a fuss when the Conservative party (mostly bought and paid for by the Israel lobby) sugested changing British law so as to avoid our obligation to detain suspected war criminals under international treaties (so as to exempt Israeli citizens from facing the risk of arrest). Come election day we will get rid of the Labour party whose hands are wet with the blood of innocent Iraqi and Afghan civillians. However with regard to the Falklands war of the 80's, feelings still run deep with most people over the age of about 35. We underestimated the Argentinian airforce and overestimated our ability to 'quickly' re capture the islands. As a result we lost several capital ships and several hundred armed forces personel. There are many in the UK who feel that we did not finish the job by attacking and destroying Argentinian military facilities actually on main land Argentina, destroying the airforce, and sinking its Navy (we did however use a nuclear submerine to sink thier battleship the 'General Belgrano' with great loss of life). All of Argentinas navy was, at the time, within missile range and already targeted (after being confined to port after the sinking of the Belgrano) and special forces teams were in Agentina ready to direct bombing raids and carry out attacks directly. There is still much 'bad blood' between the UK and Argentina regarding the Falklands, and I regret that my government has not had the forsight to see how personally the Argentinians are taking the issue of the UK extracting $600 Billion dollars worth of oil from their doorstep without sharing a penny of the revenue.
Mr Cash the people living in the Falklands have been British for generations, Russia sent in officials to quickly hand out passports to turn South Ossetians into Russians, And Russia has terrorists there called OMON your special police, They have been butchering Chechen citizens for the last 20 years, Keep your Neo Soviet union; I would rather be British any day.
Reading other peoples views on this topic it makes me realize how similar the UK & Russia are. Both countries have such a big opinion of themselves!! I guess its because they both had empires! I suggest people visit Scandinavia where people don't spend so much on arms but spend much more on education & health & transport. Denmark is the Happiest country on the planet & Norway is the wealthiest! I've been to Russia a few times(&love it) and I was born & live in the UK. (& I still think its great) But both countries should & could be so much better!
The Argentines were never actually beaten by the British. In 1831 it was the US ship the USS Lexington which bombarded the Argentine settlement into evacuating the islands (thus allowing the British to invade and occupy). In more recent times, it was US Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger who supplied the war-winning Sidewinder II missiles. Argentina won't always be led by idiot Generals, use conscripted, half-trained and ill-equipped troops. The simple truth is that ever since the Suez humiliation for Britain, they haven't been able to win much of anything without Uncle Sam having to do most of the heavy lifting ! Britain in the Malvinas needs to be lucky every minute of every day, every year. The Argentines only need to get lucky just once. Which side do you think those odds favors ?
Bob, You understand the issues, you have a dispute with Argentina, which you have to deal with, the situation has zero to do with us. You have to decide if you want to push them to the wire, by taking oil from under their noses, but be aware that other Latin American countries are also not so happy with the arrangement. For others ranting on about passports, well the British never seemed to mind giving out passports in Northern Ireland, they didn't even mind partitioning the country, they didn't even mind operating death squads to kill catholics. Just our British hypocrisy Old Chap!

Argentina, first buy some submarines, misslies and other miltary equipment from us, it will be a great upfront investment, then you can look to realise that investment.
