Rio de Janeiro wins summer Olympics 2016 bid

The second largest city in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, will host the Summer Olympics in 2016. This is the first time the Olympics will take place in South America.

Jeff is right when he says that Rio is unsafe, i live in Rio de Janeiro and know it very well, but the things are improving actually, the federal police made great operations to get those corrupt policemens and the government is trying to solve this problem.. we have 7 years to improve the city security and we can win this!

Anyone who has vacationed in Rio de Janeiro knows how UNSAFE Rio actually is. Tourists are robbed at gunpoint daily, and the police are just as corrupt as the robbers. The problem has become so bad, that tourists are NOT ALLOWED to invite their Brazilian FRIEND's to visit them in their hotel rooms, as hotel management fears for their guest's safety. For those who say Chicago is corrupt - please note Rio makes Chicago's corruption look like a walk in the park. Mark my words, thousands of tourists will be mugged when they attend the Olympics, and there's not a dang thing government officials can do to prevent it - in fact, they'll probably join-in with the mugging!
