The War On Terror.  Right.  After 911, the Brilliant American Leadership launches a War on Terror vowing to protect the great American Homeland from the barbaric hordes of terrorists soon to descend on Main Street USA - wreaking havoc in those streets.   Billions are spent on "DEFENSE" bombing oil-rich rocky hillsides in distant lands in a clever attempt to stop the terrorists in their tracks before they even think of launching toward the shores of distant America.
Then, these "Protectors of Freedom"  completely miss their only chance to tangibly prove their value and completely miss the one kamikaze who thinks turning his shoe into a bomb and blowing up his foot is somehow going to terrorize America, threaten the Government  and change the course of human history.  Right. Sounds more like a bad movie - made by National Lampoon!  Keep writing B.O!
