Technocracy vs democracy

I always found technocracy exciting. What a great idea to have a government filled not with politicians, but with people who actually know what they are doing! But is the reality of the technocratic governments as appealing as its theory? The newly-formed governments of Mario Monti in Italy and Lucas Papademos in Greece have embarked on a journey to find an answer to this question. Both men are...

I can see that you are a young girl and therefore charming with innocent thoughts.
Unfortunately, what you visualize in what you would like it to be, simply has nothing to do with what was meant to be established by them.
Politicians are nothing but cynical actors who are given a script to read, and they represent the masses because they are like them. As the masses are vastly only concerned about the hedonist satisfaction of their organs, the theoretical concept of creating a society lead by professors would dismantle the basis of the Establishment.
The US has never been a democracy but a Corporate Military Plutocracy, and most of the politicians around the world are mediocre, uneducated individuals with psychiatric issues whose public appearances are carefully crafted and restricted to a very short time where they are never cross examined because you would detect how truly incompetent and stupid are. We saw an example of that with the Australian Prime Minister.
Democracy perpetuates itself because it allows the ignorant masses to choose people who are like them. If you want professors as Leaders, you should restrict the right to vote to only the top of intellectuality and I would agree with this version. In fact it is what I put forward in my web. Restrict the vote to only  a few capable.

Isn't interesting that a plumber or an electrician must earn a liscence before they are considered competent enough to provide service to the public but journalists, CEOs & politicians are not required to pass any competency tests what-so-ever.

Larry, in the USA you have all that but in the UK one doesn't have to have a "licence" for those nor to have to qualify as a Estate Agent (Realtor) or a hairdresser. In Italy and Spain young people can't get anywhere because of bureaucracies that stiffle economic progress. The problem is that politicians are charlatans, they don't even know what they don't know, and they have no idea what to do. Most of them can't see the forest for the trees, it is a case of the blind leading the blind up the garden path to cloud cuckoo-land of moral self-indulgence and political correctness so much so that all Americans are programmed to be dismissive of reality from day one.

A.Hamdaoul, your general blather about 'charlatans' & 'moral self indulgence' is exactly what self-righteous politicians engage in...It seems you've missed the point of this article which is to get away from this self-indulgent grand-standing of which one sees so much of in the Middle East. Loud bravado of this kind almost always leads to violence and never contributes to any solutions. I think K.Zatuliveter is suggesting people in general explore a political process devoid of spontaneous, emotional solutions that appeal to baser instincts. Question is: Are we capable of that? In your case, I don't think so.

I think there exists at least one hybrid in Europe that has both elements of technocracy and democracy in it. It is a small country in central Europe, quite small and relatively wealthy and it joined the EU back in 1995 by the free will of its citizens in a referendum (coincidentally exactly 66,66% or 2/3 which were needed for accession). The country has several ministers and a chancellor which never completed tertiary education at all. Political decisions are usually made by second or third row bureaucrats/technocrats nobody even knows about. So people actually vote for incompetent politicians and let these unelected, mostly unknown, but educated people do their jobs. Where in the developed world a dentists aide can become minister of transportation, innovation and technology? That isn't even that common in the developing world nowadays.

I'm not the best with this political stuff, but I think it's better to do a combo in times of crisis with Samuel Huntington's "authoritarian modernization" where basic order from such rule enables economic development until a democracy can come later after when there is a supportive structure.  It takes certain things like a middle class for democracy to work even.  It takes specialists to do this, to set it up, like you say.  It's like setting up a new country in a land of similar tongue.  Reset.  In order for it to keep working, there has to be a strong rule of law afterwards, however, and the support that was engineered.  I think we use democracy over technocracy and others just because it fits the human condition better but sometimes we have to switch methods to build and redeem our existence.  Democracy seems to be the most human friendly.  I still want a military dictatorship, but thta's just me in my fantasy world.

@Maya

Humans live in a certain mannerism; they have rights of survival and that translates into our world.  it's too complicated to be clean.  As far as leaders go, I doubt very much that this ignorance that we're exposed to is a reality.  They must act.  Our leaders could not possibly be that stupid.  If they were, I'd be a millionaire; and yourself?  And the electoral college is setup partly so that the ignorant masses don't "win."  Maybe they pretend to relate to us.

Back to democracy, I personally believe, and I'm ignorant, that there are a bunch of elites out there making sure that we stay comfortable.  Do you know how appealing it would be to lock half the population in a labor camp and have all goods made by faceless slaves, like North Korea?  And that's what'll happen in a technocracy.  What price freedom?  Some elite(s) out there are watching out for us and keeping the human condition very, well, human.  We're not robotic zombies.  I don't think their influence will last forever, but the comfort was nice while it lasted in the human world.

How would you rule the world?

Oh, and by the way, if you are truly ignorant or messed up, you can't vote.  It's illegal for me to vote or own a car, I think.  With that and the electoral college, us of the ignorant masses are quite contained.

___There is two kinds of Democracy, the REPRESENTATIVE, or Fake one, like in USA (run by lobbeyists, of banks, multinationals and oil and military industry)___And the actually non-existent PARTICIPATIVE or Real one, which would need citizens committees (municipal or regional) participating in all important government decisions (including military and foreign affairs). ___SO, where could we find a Real one, actually nowhere that I know of. ___Sorry for deceiving the dreamers or the Propaganda beleivers.
