Happy Cosmonauts Day!

Today, April 12, I met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in his residence. Cosmonauts together with Anatoly Perminov, the Head of the Russian Federal Space Agency, visited the president’s home in Gorky. These have been touching moments. We talked with the guys on the ISS. Oleg Kotov was amazing as he managed to tell the president about our activities very precisely. I am very happy...

Wheat

The wheat has managed to grow, and it's great! It took long enough to dry and it has almost reached the lamp. And now, finally, mission control has ordered it cut, packed and refrigerated. I'll take it to Earth with me. Scientists there will have their turn at it. They are surprised themselves about how it managed to have grown into ears. They tried to do it several times and only got, as the...

Cupola

Readers asked me to tell about the Cupola. It's great stuff, indeed! You see, when you look out to the Earth through a window, it's like seeing it through an embrasure :) But from the Cupola you have a 360-degree overview and see everything! Earth here looks like ... How would I put it accurately? ... Like a map! Right! It resembles a map most of all. You can see the sun rise and set, the night...

The mission of “Endeavour” has come to its end...

That’s how it works The mission of “Endeavour” has come to its end. The shuttle’s crew has done a great job. They carried out three space walks - indeed, there were minor problems, but they dealt with everything. The shuttle delivered a new module to the American segment of the ISS and now there’s something like a gym. They moved all the fitness equipment in there...

Letter to a cosmonaut

Forgot to tell you about, perhaps, the most interesting gift delivered by the freighter! "Progress" has brought me letters from the kids of Noginsk! In my hometown of Noginsk, Mayor Vladimir Laptev announced a competition for children called "Letter to a Cosmonaut - a Christmas Fantasy". The kids sent 140 works! The jury selected 11 of them - three took first place, another...

Things progress brought

The docking unit Getting ready to welcome a cargo ship Oleg with an air conduit Surprisingly, hardly had I mentioned garlic than they failed to put in any at all. But what I said was just that the cargo craft were bringing too much garlic. A couple of onions and the same amount of garlic would have been more than enough and even desirable. In fact, cucumbers did arrive this time. Pickles, like...

About the daily schedule at the station

I promised to tell you about our daily schedule at the station. Usually the crew starts its day at 9 a.m. Moscow time, which is 6 GMT, or 00:00 CST. As I say, Greenwich Mean Time is used at the ISS, so that all the partners feel comfortable. This is Oleg running. Then the team has around 1.5 hours for washing, breakfasting and getting acquainted with the work schedule for the day, as well as for...

Spy riddle

The “magic case” turned out to be not very thrilling… Too bad. Experts solved it right away – of course this device is for heating up food, you can heat up packaged meals in. Ok, anyway… Attention! Let me introduce a new piece of spy equipment in the Russian segment of the station! This is our newest bit of technology – an extra strong lens for observations...
