Interesting article. But what about Jelzins de facto oil embargo against the DRA in 1992? A move that destroyed it finally simply because he didn't wanted to deal with the communists anymore? And one shouldn't forget the thousands of bright Afghan students that were sent to Universities in the Soviet Union and its satellite states solely because of their school performance, that applied for asylum in those countries after the religious extremists took over. That way Afghanistan effectively got rid of its (future) intelligentsia.

Now we have a civil war going on since 1978 and there is no end in sight.

 I just read Col. Krushchev's bio. I figured he was into some heavy situations. He's the man who knows about Afghanistan.

When the US Economy crashes, at least she won't be able to "F" the rest of the world about for a while. She will be back. Hopefully she will be a far wiser state than she is now.

One of her main problems is that there are too many agencies, etc, competing with each other, and not knowing what the other is doing or why. Chaos!

This is an an article that deserve all kinds of appreciation for its truthfulness, scientific analysis and knowledge about both Pakistan and Afghanistan. It was shame for international community, particularly the  UN which has become a Trojan Horse of teh US that Dr. Najibullah was murdered in the UN compound and there is still no one to bring Taliban to International Court of Justice. . As an Afghan, I believe that the Russian never invaded Afghanistan but tried to help them, protect  them and developed them. One thing more that the honorable writer forgotten is that the US has toppled down all of the secular government in Muslim country and Syria is the last target. We hope that Russia will never allow the US Beast to turn Syria into a fanatic state. We the Muslim now understand that Russians are our true friends and we apologize for what we thought and acted against them.
