Michail Marinich defected the Lukashenko's government to find his democratic movement which was supported by the Bush administration and directed against Russian-backed Lukashenko regime in preelections of 2006. His youth organisation "Zubr" was one of the most active pro-democracy groups participated in the "Orange" revolution in Kiev that resulted in the Yushchenko's victory. Michail Marinich was often compared to his Ukranian opposition counterpart and previously was not known as a supporter of union between Belarus and Russia. His democratic views are predominately pro-Western style. Again, in line with an anti-Belarusian theme, the choice of headline is rather unfortunate.
