It is possible to eradicate drug production in Afghanistan, but the locals should be provided with an alternative livelihood, says Pino Arlacchi, former director of the UN Office for Drugs Control and Crime Prevention.

Eliminating opium production in Afghanistan is very easy indeed only if there is real will to do so. It could be done from air ,by pilotless drones in few days all crops could be sprayed and people on the ground could go on producing some edible foods and other things. However it's clear that some people do not want to do this because they want to go on with producing drugs and try to gradually destroy fabric of societies such as Russia where around one hundred people die every day from those drugs. People who are organizing all this production are the same ones or descendants of those ones who participated in "Opium War" when opium was produced in India and then distributed to China which caused demise of China's society. In case of Afghanistan we are talking about hundreds of tons of raw material and chemicals for production which are huge quantities and this could not be done without knowledge of states who are involved there. This is perhaps very reason of they involvement in first place.
